Essential Competencies of Practice for Kinesiologists in Ontario

COKO is seeking feedback from Registered Kinesiologists on proposed revisions to Essential Competencies of Practice for Kinesiologists in Ontario.

Background

First published in 2014, the Essential Competencies describe the knowledge, skills, professional judgment, and behaviours Registered Kinesiologists must obtain throughout their careers. Unlike the Entry-to-Practice Competencies (Kinesiologist Core Competency Profile), which guide academic programs and the registration examination, the Essential Competencies apply across the full career span and reflect expectations for ongoing competence, professional development, and ethical practice in both clinical and non-clinical roles.

These competencies are foundational to COKO’s regulatory role. They support the Quality Assurance Program and inform self-assessments, peer and practice assessments, and the evaluation of professional conduct and competence when concerns or complaints arise.

What’s New?

Following a comprehensive review, the Quality Assurance Committee—working with a group of Registered Kinesiologists—has proposed updates to ensure the competencies remain current, clear, and reflective of evolving professional practice.
